Golden Wedding Anniversary Cakes

20 Apr
The parents of one of my oldest friends are celebrating their Golden Wedding Anniversary! Jules (my friend) cajoled me into making their celebration cakes for a large family gathering at a castle in the Lakes (how lovely!).  Peter & Veronica (the amazing couple) were a big part of my teenage years, and they will always have a special place in my heart. I really wanted to do this for them, but was also just a tad terrified! What if the cakes don’t taste good, what if they don’t look good – aagghh!!!

After much thought the following was decided on: fruit cake bottom tier and a lemon sponge  top-tier, and 12 cupcakes for the little ones. My main concern throughout this episode is how well the cakes will travel, all the way up to the Lakes?!?! Originally the cake was to be all sponge, but I thought (!) a fruit cake might just provide a sturdier base! Well, we’ll soon see. My other concern was that the cakes needed to be delivered Weds (as the family were travelling Thursday), and they wouldn’t be cut until the weekend (hope they’re still fresh!)

Golden Wedding Anniversary Cake

I was thrilled with how well the cascading gold & cream blossoms looked. Edible Glue is a wonderful invention!!
I had quite a bit of stress when we realised the box we had was just a bit too big, and it ran the risk of the cake moving in transit (it was 9pm when we realised this and so there was no chance of getting a new one!). A bit of sticky tape, some polystyrene, and a lot of Blue Peter like work resulted in a box that will hopefully keep the cake safe & in one piece!

I have to say I am really pleased with how the cupcakes look!

The Golden Wedding Anniversary Collection!

Although unfortunately the decoration with their wedding date on broke as I was loading the car, so I had to improvise with some of the left over blossoms.

16.22: Cakes were delivered this morning, after a very stressful drive to Allerton. The big cake was cocooned in the boot, in a nest of cot duvets (!) & blankets, so that was quite safe. The cupcakes, in their box, on the seat next to me, were not so well-behaved. The insert kept lifting, so the cakes were free to slide about whenever I gingerly turned a corner. I had to retrieve a couple from the box and put in the car drinks holders until we got there & I could perform CPR on them!!!

However all was well in the end, and most importantly the fabulous family were super pleased with all the cakes.

Happy Golden Wedding Anniversary Peter & Veronica!!
